They frequently asked
questions

? What Is Medicare Advantage

There is a capitated Medicare Advantage program (Medicare Part C, MA) in the United States that provides Medicare benefits. An insurer in the private sector receives a fixed payment from Medicare under Part C. This payment is then used to pay for healthcare expenses for members. Medicare allows insurers to offer different benefits from the rest of the program.[1]: 61

? How soon can I enroll?

You should enroll in Medigap during your Medigap open enrollment period. During this period, you must be 65 years of age, enrolled in Medicare Part B, or have a disability or end-stage renal disease in order to qualify. Medical underwriting is not allowed by insurance companies during open enrollment. During this time, you may also switch Medigap plans if you're not satisfied with your original selection. However, insurance companies may be able to charge you more for your plan if you enroll outside of your open enrollment period. In turn, this could result in higher premiums. A company may deny your coverage entirely if they determine your health is too poor (which they cannot do if you enroll during your open enrollment period).

? Do I have a choice of doctors?

A physician or facility that accepts Medicare also accepts Medicare Supplement Insurance. In other words, your Medigap plan will be accepted if your provider accepts Medicare.

? What should I do if I move to a different state or spend part of the year abroad?

Medigap plans usually travel with you when you move to a new state or have a seasonal retreat, even if they aren't sold there. Ensure that Medigap coverage will follow you wherever you go by checking with your insurance agent.

? Is Medicare Supplement Insurance available to me?

Each of the following requirements must be met in order to qualify for Medicare Supplement Insurance: In order to receive Medicare benefits, you must be enrolled in both Parts A and B. It is only available to people 65 and older or in states that allow Medigap coverage for people under 65 with end-stage renal disease or a qualifying disability. If you are interested in purchasing a plan, you need to live in a state where it is available. Some plans are not available in all states *These states are required to offer Medigap coverage to people under 65: CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IL, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OK, OR, PA, SD, TN, TX, OK, VT, WI.

? How do Medicare Supplement Insurance plans work with Medicare Advantage plans?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is required to be used in conjunction with a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan. Prior to enrolling in a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, you will need to leave your Medicare Advantage plan.

? How do I enroll in a Medigap plan?

Licensed agents can assist you. A comparison of the offerings from multiple insurance companies in your area is the best way to shop for a plan since prices and availability can differ between insurers. As soon as you are age-eligible, an agent will be able to provide you with a range of plan options and price quotes.

? Do Medigap plans cost a lot?

Insurance companies set their own prices for Medicare Supplement Insurance on the private market. It depends on a few factors how much a plan costs. The price of plans may vary depending on where you live. The cost of a plan in New York, for example, may be quite different from the cost of the same plan sold in California, despite offering the same basic benefits. Aside from setting their own prices, insurance companies also have the freedom to offer discounts. Some types of discounts are offered to nonsmokers, to married people, or to those who pay their premiums on an annual basis rather than monthly. You may be charged differently depending on the pricing model used by your insurance company. In older age groups, you may pay more for a plan. As you age, your plan cost may also increase. An insurance company that uses medical underwriting to determine the cost of your plan may charge you more.
